Il s’agit d’un défilé qui se place dans un contexte particulier puisqu’on a l’habitude de voir ce type de manifestation militaire à Paris, bien qu’il en existe ailleurs en province comme à Strasbourg. La France de 1946 est une France en reconstruction dans tous les domaines. Du gouvernement qui reprend la place du régime de Vichy ainsi que de l’occupant, de l’armée qui doit se reconstruire, mais aussi à la place de la France en tant que grande puissance aux côtés des Alliés, tout doit se refaire. Longtemps l’Alsace et sa capitale ont été une grande source de conflit entre l’Allemagne et le France. Annexée au XVIIe par Louis XIV, puis reprise en 1870 par le chancelier allemand Bismarck, cependant une nouvelle fois récupérée par la France à la suite de la Grande Guerre de 1914 – 1918, elle est encore une fois reprise par les Allemands menés par Hitler en 1940. Ce n’est qu’en 1944, avec la libération de Strasbourg le 22 novembre 1944 avec les troupes du Général Leclerc, que la ville redevient française. A Paris, mais cela vaut aussi pour Strasbourg, on parle d’une « nouvelle armée française » victorieuse et où le peuple de France « crie pour la première fois sa liberté ». Il s’agit, en France du premier défilé depuis l’occupation allemande. On y voit comme dans le film de Charles Bruckmann, des soldats français paradant fièrement, mais aussi les troupes coloniales. Là où le défilé de Strasbourg diverge, c’est lors de la parade de camions d’infanterie avec des canons remorqués, qui ne sont pas présents à Paris. Or à Paris, on voit des M4 Sherman (blindés américains) signe du retard technologique français sur les autres puissances militaires car la France ne produit pas ses propres blindés, elle est pour le moment garante des industries américaines. Cependant les soldats y sont et cela annonce le retour de la France dans le groupe très restreint des puissances militaires de l’après guerre et dans un nouvel ordre mondial.  Ce défilé, pourrait faire passer deux messages si l’on interprète le contexte de la France. Déjà, l’occupation allemande a complètement chamboulé l’armée française, qui s’est vue réduite à un nombre de soldats très réduits, voire à des milices. L’appellation de puissance militaire n’est qu’un reflet du passé de la France ; le pays, à cause de l’occupation, n’a pu mener aucun projet de modernisation officiel de son armée, tout l’effort était soit destiné à l’Allemagne nazie, soit simplement stoppé. Ainsi, la France est privée d’une armée moderne dans tous les domaines. Il y a un retard technologique et militaire que la France doit au plus vite combler puisque la guerre est vecteur de « progrès » en terme d’armement et d’organisation. Ce défilé est donc un message, qui pourrait être lancé au monde mais aussi aux Français ; la France est, et restera une puissance militaire. Enfin, ce défilé, à Strasbourg, sous-entend un contexte plus local et un message plus ciblé. A l’origine cette place a été aménagé par le Reich allemand suite à l’annexion de l’Alsace par celui-ci en 1870. C’est en 1883, pour montrer l’attachement de la ville à l’empire, que les autorités bâtissent ce lieu avec un palais impérial encore existant et fonctionnel aujourd’hui. L’empereur avait pour coutume d’avoir des palais résidentiels pour lui et sa cours afin de symboliser sa présence à différents lieu de l’empire. Ce palais ainsi que la place montre la main mise de l’empereur sur Strasbourg dans un contexte plus large qu’est la « Neustadt » (nouvelle ville), nouveau quartier de Strasbourg érigé au même moment par le Reich. Conçue par Johann Carl Otto, la place nommée à l’époque « Kaiserplatz » (place impériale) s’achève en 1887. En 1919, après le retour de l’Alsace-Lorraine à la France, on nomme la place, qui n’avait donc aucun équivalent auparavant sous la France d’avant 1870, place de la République, pour montrer les valeurs françaises aux Alsaciens et aux Allemands. Cependant, en 1940, suite à la deuxième annexion allemande, la place devient la « Bismarckplatz ». On ne cherche pas à redonner le caractère impérial de cette place, puisque Hitler n’est pas un « Kaiser », sans pour autant faire table rase du passé. Le régime nazi célèbre les hommes forts qui ont contribué à la grandeur de l’Allemagne. Otto Bismarck en fait parti puisqu’il vaincu la France et unifié l’Allemagne, ce qui correspond tout à fait à la vision d’Hitler : vaincre la France et unifier, glorifier les peuples allemands, ce qu’il a fait en 1940. Le nom de « Bismarckplatz » rappelle ces aspects. Ce n’est qu’en 1945, au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale que la place retrouve son nom de « Place de la République ». Depuis sa création jusqu’à encore aujourd’hui, elle est l’endroit le plus adapté de la ville de Strasbourg pour manifester le pouvoir en place, que ce soit sous domination allemande que sous domination française.
