Contexte et analyse
In the 19th century, the relationship between families and children changed immensely. In the centuries before, as a rule, there was a unity of home and workplace, but in the nineteenth century it resolved with increasing industrialization. It developed the civil society with small families. The birth rate declined, the children got a different status and were increasingly spoiled. This special significance of children in society becomes very clear through the staging of the children's festival in Gaggenau, where they are the center of attention and are celebrated.
The children's party with relocation in Gaggenau took place in 1903 for the first time. It was organized every summer by the "Commercial Singing Association Gaggenau", a section of the 1874 founded by the owner of the ironworks trade association. The purpose was to "increase, promote and improve the domestic industry and industry and the employment of the workers employed by them". The club developed into an important institution in Gaggenau with a tenfold increase in membership from 77 (1876) to 750 (1924). On the occasion of the 90th anniversary in 1964, the Children's Festival states: "With how much love, sacrifice and almost devout understanding, the respective running groups of the children were first staged, then small carriages of every kind and every thought created and decorated, until they were in larger carriages with animal teams or even motorized the childlike sympathy and enthusiasm tripped ".
This makes it clear that the tradition was held long, because the same is the way the parade in 1912 is designed, which is documented here cinematically. A uniformed marching band is followed by well-dressed children, mostly with hats and 'summer day sticks' (bars with pretzels) in their hands. Then there are motive cars that address various aspects such as "Future Marriage", "Dollar Princess", "Forest Devotion", "Trumpeter of Säckingen", "Homecoming from the Alps", "Black Forest", "The Washer Joy" or "Folk Song". The motive cars are not reminiscent of carnival parades of the region. In between, again and again horse-drawn carriages with children. White-robed girls also hold sticks with pretzels and flower bows. The move is met with great interest. At the roadside, the population stands trellis in dense rows or leans out of the windows of their homes. Among them are many children, that is, not all of them are actively involved in the move. The event is shot with tripod, since the wooden cameras at the time were still big and heavy, the picture is very stable. The setting remains the same and lets the move past the main road. Again and again, a new film reel must be inserted into the magazine, so you miss some motifs. The jubilee brochure for the 50th Foundation Festival states: "During the unfortunate World War, the activity of the association rested. There were 238 members drafted into the army or navy, of which 19 died a hero's death. (...) At Christmas 1915, all the children whose fathers were in the field were provided with laundry and other things. In addition, at the beginning of the war, charity concerts were held in aid of the Red Cross. "This quote clarifies the important social function of the association, which took care of the members' children.
On his 50th anniversary in 1924, the commercial singing club resumed the tradition after a ten-year break. An advertisement promises a move with about 100 cars and groups, in which nearly 1,000 children are involved. It is attractive not only for the Gaggenauer, but for the population of the whole Murg Valley. The move starts at the Benzwerk and the population is asked to flag the houses along the way. In addition to amusements such as carousels, shooting galleries and waffle bakeries on the Festwiese, there is a window dressing competition of the local shops to convince the foreigners of their qualities. The children's party has gained economic importance, in the spirit of the trade association and is closed in the evening with a big fireworks display. The local scoreboard reported enthusiastically on 24.6.1924 and tried to persuade existing critics: "Those who were somewhat critical of the event will be extremely satisfied with it today, indeed it would be vivid to regret if such a folk festival has become a piece of home lost. "In 1927, the children's parade was expanded to include cars for Gaggenau's history and legends, as well as various traditional costumes from Baden and a presentation of Aero Lloyd aircraft.Lieux ou monuments
