Contexte et analyse
The Lörracher carnival 1937 is the focus of this private film, which documents various events. The first minute shows the night walkers' parade on the 'dirty Dunnschtig' (February 4, 1937), the Thursday before the Carnival weekend. The sequence is rotated in a fixed setting by a tripod and behind the camera a spotlight lights up that illuminates at least part of the move at night, but the pictures are still often too dark. It is therefore difficult to see whether only men and children take part in the procession with torches. A white nightgown and a white pointed cap were prescribed for the participants and some of them also wear face masks. The 'Müpfi', a symbolic figure for grumblers and moaners, was symbolically burned. They make music with drums and flutes. The night walkers are followed by the civilian population and you can see that everyone is participating in this event.
The text follows: Guard parade on Sunday morning. Attention! The king is coming. ”In the city center (lion pharmacy). The carnival prince 'Jendi' Karl Maurer comes with a female page retinue and is accompanied by the 'Löracher Zundel', a carnival figure that was specially created. Its cap is adorned with a long pheasant feather. They are greeted by representatives of the council and the bosses of the guild and satchel guards and walk the 'troops'. In front of the building there are guard houses on the left and right of the entrance, each with a female guard from the Guild Guard. Here the film changes to color. Even when the colors are faded and have a green tinge, you can see the color of the hustle and bustle. A Zundel troop goes into the town hall with a tablet cream cake. The prince with his entourage, the council and a Zundel group with red, green and yellow patches are already standing on his balcony. From there you follow the short deployment. He is of great interest to the people who line the street.
The satchel guard in historical uniforms and with a cannon is followed by the guild guard with young women who carry lances. The whole spectacle gives a military-patriotic impression. Then the council is shown when leaving the building and the Prince's departure in an open convertible. Pictures of a meeting of the council follow, which are somewhat underexposed. A text "Narri! Narro! Mir Lörracher Narre sin do!" directs the recordings of the actual parade, which was shot from three different positions that are shown chronologically one after the other. The motifs of the train are therefore repeated. Music and traditional costume groups take part in the move, as well as some elaborately designed motif cars. The population lines the streets and only a few are in costume. Also present are the 'Fasnetsrufer' guild from Freiburg, who make noise with ratchets. The first secured document for the Lörracher Fasnacht is a written mention from the year 1620. The first photographically documented mask procession took place on February 11, 1866. The cornerstone of today's Lörracher Fasnacht was not laid until 1935. Before there was no fixed organization that took care of the orientation of the. It is based on the Swabian-Alemannic carnival, but also contains elements from the Rhineland and later also the Basel carnival. In addition to the processions, the carnival fires are an integral part of traditional customs. Such traditions and festivals shape the identity of a region. The Upper Rhine region is connected by a common culture that originated in the Middle Ages in the German-speaking countries and can also be found in the cityscape.
The carnival guild Lörrach was founded by the then mayor Reinhard Boos and the hairdresser Johann Maier-Muser. They wanted to organize an organized carnival in Lörrach. The painter Adolf Glattacker joined this initiative and then created the emblem of the fool's guild and the guild head. In February 1936, the first independent Lörracher carnival took place with a public parada. In order to ensure that the Lörrach fool's guild was well received by the residents, a few cliques and the Lörrach fool's guild were founded in the same year. They also participated in the Association of the Upper Rhine Fools 'Guilds and organized the 1st Upper Rhine Fools' Meeting on February 12 and 13, 1938.
The amateur film for the Carnival in Lörrach from 1937 is of great importance for local historiography, because it gives viewers information about the traditions of small towns, but also from different regions. This film enables historians, anthropologists and cultural scientists to find out a lot about traditional festivals and local identities.
