The children's festival with a parade in Gaggenau had become a veritable tradition. It took place in 1903 for the first time. After a ten-year break in and after the First World War, it was regularly organized again from 1924 onwards. It was organized every summer by the "Handels-Gesangs-Verein Gaggenau". The first footage dates from 1912 (LFS 3508), and then the children's parade and the associated fair were regularly documented with film cameras. If you look at the different years, it is noticeable that there are always recurring elements, such as the music bands, the children with flower-bedecked, summer-day sticks, the motive carriages pulled by hand, with oxen or horses , and horse-drawn carriages. The motive cars are not reminiscent of carnival parades of the region. What's surprising is what you do not see. The long shots are made, as all persons look in the direction of the camera and hardly move. The recordings look like an arranged tableau. After the recordings from the fairground, the parade is shown again with a band at the front. They are gentlemen with black suits, and many wear a melon on their heads. It is followed by a large group of children who are well dressed, the girls mostly in white. They wear the already mentioned, summer day sticks' with the pretzels at the top. This is followed by several motive cars and then two teenagers who have disguised themselves as clock alarm clock. In this sequence you can see a flag hanging on the top right. It is painted over with a black dot, which does not have a fixed size, but pulsate. It can be assumed that it is a swastika flag, whose center was later clearly painted over by hand. This is an indication that the film was reworked after 1945 and cleared of all Nazi symbols, as was done with educational and instructional films. By removing symbols such as the swastika flag, they were 'denazified' and could be used as basically non-political films. The brevity of the film, which lasts less than three minutes, suggests that after 1945 many scenes with Nazi reference were removed. On one of the following motive cars, two boys with HJ uniforms are sitting in front of the horses. The car is decorated with small swastika flags, which were apparently overlooked during retouching. But there is again a spot on the front of the car, which was covered with a large black spot. This cover-up shows that the children's festival in Gaggenau in 1937 was politically seized by the National Socialists and wanted to erase the evidence for it after the end of the Second World War. However, this was done so unprofessional that you can see the falsification on closer inspection of the images clearly. Such editing of photos and films is not a new phenomenon, but also very early to prove. Inaugurée en 1903, la fête des enfants de Gaggenau, avec son défilé, devient rapidement une tradition. Après une interruption de dix ans pendant et après la Première Guerre mondiale, elle est régulièrement organisée à nouveau chaque été à partir de 1924 par le Gewerbe-Gesang-Verein, la chorale des professionnels de Gaggenau. Si les premières images filmées datent de 1912 (LFS 3508), la fête des enfants et sa kermesse sont ensuite régulièrement fixées sur la pellicule, par exemple en 1937 (LFS 4123). De ce point de vue, les images de la fête des enfants de 1937 sont assez typiques, car elles montrent les composantes évoquées ci-dessus du défilé : petits orchestres, enfants sur leur trente-et-un tenant des bâtons décorés de fleurs avec un bretzel sur le dessus, chars à thème divers, ou encore images de la kermesse. Ce qui est surprenant, c’est plutôt ce qu’on ne voit pas. Car dans d’autres manifestations comparables, telles que le défilé du 600e anniversaire de Philippsburg (LFS 1407), les formations nazies font partie intégrante du cortège, la ville est décorée de drapeaux à croix gammée et des représentants nazis saluent la procession. Tout cela est absent à Gaggenau, du moins dans les images telles qu’elles nous sont parvenues. Certains plans sont mal cadrés, les têtes sont coupées ou l’image s’interrompt à la moitié. Devant le stand de glaces de l’entreprise Fischer de Karlsruhe, pas un seul du groupe de jeunes ne porte l’uniforme. Les plans longs semblent mis en scène, car tout le monde regarde vers la caméra et bouge à peine. Les images font l’effet d’un tableau composé. Après quelques vues de la kermesse, nous revenons au défilé, avec un orchestre en tête – des hommes en costume noir, portant pour beaucoup un chapeau melon. Vient ensuite un grand groupe d’enfants bien habillés, les filles principalement en blanc. Ils portent les bâtons déjà mentionnés, surmontés d’un bretzel. Plusieurs chars à thème suivent, puis deux adolescents déguisés en réveils. C’est là que l’on découvre quelque chose d’assez inhabituel. Dans cette séquence, on voit un drapeau accroché en haut à droite. Il est recouvert d’un point noir, qui n’est pas de taille fixe et qui bouge. On peut supposer qu’il s’agit d’un drapeau à croix gammée dont le milieu a été peint à la main par la suite. Cela indique que le film a été révisé après 1945 et expurgé de tous les symboles nazis, comme l’ont également été les films éducatifs et pédagogiques. Moyennant la suppression de symboles tels que le drapeau à croix gammée, ils étaient ainsi « dénazifiés » et susceptibles de continuer à être utilisés comme des films essentiellement apolitiques. La brièveté du film (moins de trois minutes) suggère en outre que plusieurs plans évoquant le régime nazi ont pu être coupés après 1945. Sur le char qui suit, deux garçons en uniforme des Jeunesses hitlériennes sont assis sur les chevaux à l’avant. Le char est décoré de petits drapeaux à croix gammée, qui semblent avoir été négligés lors des retouches. À l’avant, au contraire, un nouveau grand point noir recouvre un autre emplacement. Cette campagne de camouflage montre que la fête des enfants de Gaggenau en 1937 a également été récupérée à des fins politiques par les nazis et qu’on a voulu effacer les traces de cet accaparement après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cependant, cela a été fait avec un tel amateurisme que l’on peut clairement déceler les retouches en regardant les photos. Un tel traitement appliqué aux photos et aux films n’est pas un phénomène nouveau, il est même attesté très tôt. Par conséquent, ce film montre que notre confiance dans l’objectivité des images doit aussi être remise en question s’agissant de séquences très anciennes. Schaut man sich die verschiedenen Jahre an, so fällt auf, dass es immer wiederkehrende Elemente gibt, wie die Musikkapellen, die Kinder mit den mit Blumen und Brezeln geschmückten ‚Sommertagsstecken‘, die Motivwagen, die mit der Hand, mit Ochsen oder Pferden gezogen wurden, und Pferdekutschen. Die Motivwagen erinnern nicht von ungefähr an Fasnachtsumzüge der Region. [[Fichier:Kinderumzug Gaggenau 1937 3.png|vignette|Die Teilnehmenden des Umzugs präsentieren sich vor der Kamera (Foto: LFS)]] Von daher sind die Aufnahmen des Kinderfestes von 1937 durchaus typisch, denn sie zeigen die erwähnten Elemente des Umzugs wie die Musikkapellen, die schön angezogenen Kinder mit den mit Blumen geschmückten Stangen, an deren Spitze eine Brezel steckt, die Motivwagen zu verschiedenen Themen und Aufnahmen vom Festplatz. Überraschend ist eher, was man nicht zu sehen bekommt. Denn bei vergleichbaren Ereignissen wie dem Umzug zu 600 Jahre Philippsburg (LFS 1407) sind NS-Formationen fester Bestandteil des Umzugs, die Stadt ist mit Hakenkreuzfahnen geschmückt und NS-Repräsentanten nehmen den Umzug auch ab. All dies fehlt in Gaggenau, zumindest in den überlieferten Bildern. In der Gruppe der Jugendlichen vor dem Eisstand der Firma Fischer aus Karlsruhe ist kein einziger uniformiert. Die Totalen wirken gestellt, da alle Personen in Richtung Kamera schauen und sich kaum bewegen. Die Aufnahmen wirken wie ein arrangiertes Tableau. Nach den Aufnahmen vom Festplatz wird noch einmal der Umzug gezeigt mit einer Musikkapelle vorne weg. Es sind Herren mit schwarzen Anzügen, und viele tragen eine Melone auf dem Kopf. Es folgt eine große Gruppe von Kindern, die gut gekleidet sind, die Mädchen überwiegend in Weiß. Sie tragen die bereits angesprochenen ‚Sommertagsstecken‘ mit den Brezeln an der Spitze. Es folgen mehrere Motivwagen und dann zwei Jugendliche, die sich als Uhrwecker verkleidet haben. In dieser Sequenz sieht man oben rechts eine Fahne hängen. Sie ist mit einem schwarzen Punkt übermalt, der keine feste Größe hat, sondern pulsiert. Es ist zu vermuten, dass es eine Hakenkreuz-Fahne ist, deren Mitte später deutlich mit der Hand übermalt wurde. Dies ist ein Indiz, dass der Film nach 1945 überarbeitet und von allen NS-Symbolen bereinigt wurde, wie dies ebenfalls mit Lehr- und Unterrichtsfilmen gemacht wurde. Durch das Entfernen von Symbolen wie der Hakenkreuzfahne wurden sie ‚entnazifiziert‘ und konnten so als im Grunde unpolitische Filme weiterverwendet werden. Die Kürze des Films von unter drei Minuten spricht dafür, dass nach 1945 etliche Aufnahmen mit NS-Bezug entfernt wurden. Auf einem der nun folgenden Motivwagen sitzen vorne auf den Pferden zwei Jungs mit HJ-Uniformen. Der Wagen ist mit kleinen Hakenkreuzfahnen geschmückt, die bei der Retusche anscheinend übersehen wurden. Dafür gibt es auf der Vorderseite des Wagens wieder eine Stelle, die mit einem großen schwarzen Fleck überdeckt wurde. Diese Vertuschungsaktion zeigt, dass auch das Kinderfest in Gaggenau 1937 politisch von den Nationalsozialisten vereinnahmt wurde und man die Indizien dafür nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ausradieren wollte. Dies geschah allerdings so dilettantisch, dass man die Manipulation bei genauer Betrachtung der Bilder deutlich erkennen kann. Solche Bearbeitungen von Fotos und Filmen sind kein neues Phänomen, sondern ebenfalls schon sehr früh nachzuweisen. Von daher zeigt sich auch hier, dass unser Vertrauen, dass ein Bild objektiv zeigt, was war, schon sehr lange zu hinterfragen ist. Kay Hoffmann
