Ab ca. 1930 dreht er Filme im 16 mm Format. Im Mittelpunkt steht seine Familie, sein Haus in Freiburg und vor allem seine Tochter, die er von Jugend ab über Hochzeit, Enkelkind bis zur Ausreise 1949 nach Chile filmisch begleitet. Mit dem Auto unternimmt die gutbürgerliche Familie regelmäßig Ausflüge in den Südwesten, Deutschland, Elsass, Schweiz, Österreich und Italien. Diese Filme sind einmalige Dokumente von den Orten und Sehenswürdigkeiten in den 1930 und 1940 Jahren und zeigen damalige Alltagssituationen. Er tritt 1911 in den „Freiburger Turnerbund“ ein. Im Winter sind die Balkes begeisterte Skisportler, im Sommer Wassersportler und dies wird mit der Kamera festgehalten. Oft ist er auch selber vor der Kamera zu sehen, muss also von jemand anderem aufgenommen werden. Er nimmt regelmäßig die von ihm gebauten Häuser auf. Immer wieder macht er Aufnahmen von zeithistorischer Bedeutung wie die Rückkehr deutscher Soldaten vom Frankreichfeldzug nach Freiburg, französische Kriegsgefangene, der Wiederaufbau in Breisach und im Elsass, das zerstörte Freiburg Ende 1944 oder den Fasnetsumzug durch das zerstörte Freiburg 1949. Seine Filme dokumentieren den Alltag und das Familienleben einer gutbürgerlichen Gesellschaft in der ersten Hälfte des 20. + | |Resume_en=Curt Balke was born the son of a master mason in Aschersleben and grew up there. After high school, he worked in the construction business of his father and other companies. He was on study trips to the United States (1902), Switzerland, Italy and the South of France (1910). In order to continue his artistic education, he studied at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1908-1910 and began to work as an architect. In addition to various private houses, as an enthusiastic gymnast he builz the sports house of the University of Freiburg and in 1914 the sports house of the Turnerbund Freiburg. In 1915 he worked as a reinforcement soldier in the First World War and was involved in the construction, maintenance and operation of the fortifications in the rear. From 1915 to 1918 he worked as an architect and building manager at the Freiburg Municipal Building Authority. | ||
